âRoland thinks that I should see my brother,â I blurted out before Maureene even had a chance to close the door all the way.
Heâd dropped the little suggestion while weâd been sitting on his couch watching a movie. Then heâd given me room to take it in and think about it. There was no real pressure from him, but I did have this sense of not wanting to disappoint him.
Also, maybe he was right.
It had been over a year since⦠Iâd gotten out. Iâd had a year to work on myself. A year of little check-ins every few months and a handful of minutes to hear Keithâs worried voice.
Perhaps it was time.
But I wasnât sure I was ready.
I just needed to work out why I wasnât.
I took in a deep breath, then turned to face her, giving her a smile that was really awkward.
She, in turn, simply gave me that look that she always did when it seemed like I was bringing her into the middle of a conversation.
As if it wasnât painfully obvious, I was a wreck over the whole thing. Iâd spent Friday in a daze, fucking up things left and right at work. Luckily, fucking up there only meant that Iâd used the glass cleaner to wipe down the counters in the bathroom. The fact that it took me until I was almost done with the entire counter in the first floor public bathrooms was all the proof I needed that I was a mess. Roland had only made a suggestion, said he thought it would be a good idea. Reed, Tony, and Keith were hosting Thanksgiving at their house, the one not in the city. Reed had invited everyone, including me. Iâd already told him not to expect me and he hadnât made me feel bad about it.
Roland, on the other hand, suggested that I go. Suggested in the way that was a tiny bit pushy, but the kind of pushy that had love behind it. I wasnât mad at him, but I was frustrated with how that little suggestion had been messing with my head.
Iâd left work Friday almost two hours later than I normally would, and was so drained that I had to ride home in the middle of the night, peddling with shaky legs.
And the weekend hadnât been any better. In fact, it was way worse since I hadnât had work to half-distract me. I avoided Roland while I practically begged Reese to take me out Saturday night, just so I could get out of my head. Though, I hadnât really had to beg since he was expecting me to go anyway. I guess that was one good thing that had happened over the last few months since we started hanging out, Saturday nights out had become more of a regular thing. While I didnât feel one hundred percent comfortable in a club-type situation, I had managed to shed some of my anxiety about it. I didnât panic nearly as much now. It helped that Reese was always there with me, watching in a sly way to make sure I was okay.
